Dual-Access Truck Cap Latch Selection Guide: Cutout Size, H35/H40 Brackets, and OEM Options

A truck cap door lock should do more than secure cargo. In our previous guide, How to Choose a Safer Truck Cap Door Lock: Exterior Security and Interior Release , we explained why exterior security and interior release should work together.

That article addressed the safety principle. This second guide moves to the engineering decision: which latch version fits the door, how MS6018-1 differs from MS6018-2, what H35 and H40 mean, and which measurements an OEM buyer should confirm before approving a sample.

These questions matter on gullwing doors for work-truck canopies, service bodies, pickup campers, and equipment compartments. The correct choice depends on more than faceplate size. Interior access, cutout dimensions, frame geometry, adjustment range, sealing pressure, and component materials all need to be checked.

From the Safety Principle to the Actual Mechanism

MS6018-1 applies the principle discussed in Part 1 through two separate mechanical operating paths. The exterior key cylinder prevents the outside handle from opening the door, while the red interior handle can still mechanically release the latch. No electrical actuator or remote control is required.

When the exterior cylinder is locked, the door cannot be opened from outside. The independent interior mechanical handle remains available to release the latch from inside.

This is a mechanical interior-release function. It should not be described as a certified emergency-exit system unless the finished installation has been tested to the relevant requirement.

MS6018-1 and MS6018-2 Serve Different Applications

The two versions address different installation priorities. MS6018-1 requires a larger opening but adds the interior mechanical release. MS6018-2 uses a smaller cutout and is intended for applications that only require exterior operation.

Buyers should select the required function first, then confirm the technical drawing against the actual door structure.

MS6018-1: Interior-Release Version

  • Approximate exterior face: 108 × 55 mm
  • Approximate cutout: 90.5 × 35 mm
  • Panel thickness shown on the current drawing: ts < 11 mm
  • Exterior key locking with independent interior mechanical release

MS6018-2: Smaller-Cutout Exterior Version

  • Approximate exterior face: 85 × 40 mm
  • Approximate cutout: 71 × 25 mm
  • Panel thickness shown on the current drawing: ts < 11 mm
  • Exterior operation only on the current production version

A compact small-cutout version with independent interior release is currently under development. Commercial availability and final specifications have not yet been confirmed.

What H35 and H40 Actually Describe

H35 and H40 identify bracket geometry for different door and frame relationships. On the current sales listing, the 40 mm option corresponds to H35, while the 45 mm option corresponds to H40.

This choice should not be made from door-skin thickness alone. The installer must consider the mounting surface, door frame, sealing gasket, and latch contact point.

The MS6018-2 drawing shows an adjustment range of approximately 10–25 mm for H35 and 15–30 mm for H40. The M6 adjustment screw changes the final contact position and compression. Correct adjustment helps the door close firmly without placing unnecessary load on the handle, bracket, or rubber seal.

Measurements to Confirm Before Ordering

  • Existing cutout width and height
  • Door-panel thickness
  • Distance from the panel surface to the door frame
  • Required gasket compression
  • Clearance for the latch arm in open and closed positions
  • Whether an interior-release function is required

Material Selection Should Be Reviewed Component by Component

It is inaccurate to describe the complete assembly as one material. Different components perform different mechanical and sealing functions.

  • The black exterior housing, red interior release handle, silver mounting bracket, and latch arm are specified as Zamak 5 zinc-alloy die castings.
  • The spring, M6 adjustment screw, nuts, and related fasteners are made from steel with a zinc-plated surface.
  • An elastic rubber gasket is installed around the mounting interface.

The red interior handle is metal rather than PVC or plastic, providing a more direct operating feel and better durability for repeated outdoor use.

Weather, Water, and Road Performance

The exterior surface uses an outdoor-grade coating intended to improve resistance to weather and UV exposure. The latch has also been used and evaluated under real road conditions in Canada.

Formal UV exposure hours, vibration ratings, and cycle-life values should only be published after controlled testing and supporting documentation are available.

An in-house immersion demonstration was performed, and no visible water ingress was observed during the demonstration. This is useful as a factory design check, but it is not the same as an accredited IEC 60529 certification.

IP65 refers to a defined dust and water-jet test, while immersion ratings use different procedures. For that reason, we do not claim an accredited IP65 certification without a corresponding third-party report.

What Recent Orders Tell Us About Buyer Behavior

Recent order records include customers in the United States, Australia, Kuwait, and Brazil. Quantities range from two-piece evaluation orders to a follow-up order for 360 units across both 40 mm and 45 mm configurations.

This pattern is familiar in B2B hardware sourcing. Buyers normally verify fitment and operation first, then standardize the selected configuration for production.

A useful sample evaluation should confirm:

  • Closed compression and door alignment
  • Exterior key locking
  • Interior release where applicable
  • Latch-arm clearance
  • Gasket condition after repeated operation

OEM Options and Project Support

Available OEM options include:

  • Custom logos
  • Black or silver metallic finishes
  • Keyed-alike systems
  • Custom key-code configurations
  • Bracket lengths adapted to different door structures

Standard samples are available for prompt shipment. Installation drawings, cutout dimensions, and bracket-selection support can be supplied for engineering review.

The latch can be considered for left- or right-side doors when orientation and operating clearance are confirmed. Its format is designed around commonly used compression-latch layouts, but compatibility should never be assumed from appearance alone. The existing opening and frame geometry must be checked against the drawing.

Buyer Checklist

  • Decide whether somebody may enter the enclosed area and require an interior-release function.
  • Measure the existing cutout and panel thickness.
  • Check the frame distance before selecting H35 or H40.
  • Confirm the adjustment range and required gasket compression.
  • Specify keyed alike, individual key codes, or another key-management requirement.
  • Evaluate a sample on the actual door before approving a production quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can MS6018-1 be opened from inside when the exterior is locked?

Yes. Its red interior handle uses an independent mechanical release path that remains operational after the exterior cylinder is locked.

Does MS6018-2 have the same interior-release function?

No. The current MS6018-2 is a smaller-cutout, exterior-operated version. A compact interior-release version is still under development.

Is the latch IP65 certified?

An in-house immersion demonstration has been completed, but an accredited IEC 60529 IP65 report is not currently being claimed.

Can multiple locks use the same key?

Yes. Keyed-alike systems and custom key-code configurations are available for OEM projects.

Conclusion

The first article in this series explained why exterior security and interior release should work together. The next step is making sure that the selected mechanism actually fits the door.

MS6018-1 is the current choice when independent interior mechanical release is required. MS6018-2 provides a smaller cutout for exterior-only applications. Cutout dimensions, panel thickness, frame distance, H35/H40 bracket geometry, and gasket compression determine whether the installation will work correctly.

For distributors and OEM buyers, a drawing review and an installed sample remain more valuable than choosing a latch from its appearance or unit price alone.
